When Ms Colreavy said we were going to get more involved in planning and choosing parts of PE, we were so happy. We already loved PE but this was going to make it better. But we didn’t just pick anything we wanted to do in PE. That would have been too crazy in the hall. Instead, when Ms Colreavy told us the sport we would be doing, we talked about the skills we would like to learn. Then when the skills were done in PE, we got to spend time practicing the ones we needed to work on. This was good because if we were already great at throwing, we could improve a different skill instead of practicing throwing.
Ms Colreavy put us in pairs, and gave us a sheet to design our own warm up. We have pictures of them below. We picked a theme and designed pulse raisers and stretches for the theme. We had minecraft themes, Roblox themes and animal themes. Ms Colreavy said they were so creative and that they were better than some of her warm up plans! It was so fun to teach them to our class. We had to prepare the materials and plan what we were going to say.
We also learned how to set goals for ourselves. For example, in Athletics, we measured our jumps, sprints and throws at the beginning of the week and created a goal to reach by the last lesson. It was nice picking our own goals and not the teacher picking them for us. We made them clear. We didn’t just say run faster. We made them SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely). Everyones was different because we all had different goals.
We also got to do a PE workbook. It was weird at first when we had to write about PE because usually we just do PE! We got to write in them about the PE lessons and think about what we liked. We also wrote a letter to the teacher about how PE was going. Ms Colreavy read them after. Our favourite part about the workbook were the exit tickets. They didn’t take long to do and were easy to do right after PE. Some of us found the other activities a bit tricky
Getting a chance to have a say in what we do has been great. After we did this PE project, Ms Colreavy started letting us do this in other subjects. For example, in Maths, we taught topics to each other during June revision.
We want to keep designing warm ups and cool downs in 4th class and plan as much as we can. Maybe when we get older, the teachers could let us plan the actual PE lesson with them!
Thanks for reading our feedback!
