Teaching and leading primary physical education

The summer school course will provide opportunities for teachers to enhance their knowledge, skills and confidence in teaching all strands of the PE curriculum. Numerous practical activities and resources applicable to all class levels will be presented relating to Athletics, Gymnastics, Dance, Games and Outdoor and Adventure.

Examples of how pupil learning can be promoted in the affective (teamwork, fair play), cognitive (understanding of game concepts) and psychomotor (development of fundamental movement skills) domain will be evident in the workshops. Recent developments and research in primary physical education will also be explored practically through innovative curriculum models such as sport education, teaching games for understanding and teaching personal and social responsibility.

This course will also provide opportunities for participants to develop their understanding of primary physical education leadership. Participants will consider how they can contribute to quality physical education provision across the wider school and may be of particular interest to those involved in whole school initiatives, such as the Active School Flag and Health Promoting Schools.
